Enjambment:
In the poem "Digging", there are several lines that contain this concept, making us feel like it's moving us into the next line without pause.

The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly

Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away

The tone of Acquainted with the Night seems to be somber, sort of a melancholy feel to the speaker's thoughts. You also get a sense of loneliness.

I agree that the tone of Acquainted with the Night conveys a sense of loneliness. The title of the poem suggests that the speaker is talking about a feeling that he has felt often before.
ReplyDeleteI read "Aquainted with the Night" and "Digging" but then decided that I wanted to talk about an easier poem... So props to your for sticking with the harder ones (in my opinion). And you did a great job with them too. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you're right about the tone. It is very somber. Also, the speaker does seem to be wandering, perhaps they are lonely, looking for someone or something.
ReplyDeleteI feel in digging the theme of the poem is one of a son breaking away from the family life style is that how you saw it? I think in lines 10 and 11 he is just describing how his father looked while he worked and that is why there was an enjambment doing it quickly lets you move on to maybe a more crucial part of the poem. sends your focus elsewhere
